 WEST HAM UNITED

Black Cats Unlucky For Hammers?

West ham have been drawn at Sunderland in the third round of the Carling Cup, made at lunchtime on Saturday.

Charlie Nicholas pulled the Black Cats from the bag first, before Phil Thompson paired them with Avram Grant's side - in the draw on Sky Sports.

The tie will be played during the week of 20th September.

Manchester United 3 West Ham United 0 at Old Trafford

Barclays Premiership (Saturday 17.30)

West Ham succumbed to an inevitable defeat at Old Trafford this evening. Avram grant’s side have now lost all three of their matches conceding nine goals in the process.

Grant made two changes to the side that played Bolton, bringing in the defensive Jonathon Spector and Luis Boa Morte for the attack minded Fredric Piquionne and Pablo Barrera. The Hammers set up in a 4-5-1 formation.

For the first half hour the home side struggled to get into any rhythm as the Hammers stuck to their defensive system but failed to offer anything in the way of a goal threat. However on the half hour Ryan Giggs cut inside Spector and the defender clipped the veteran, Giggs going down inside the area to win a penalty. Wayne Rooney duly converted the spot kick sending Green the wrong way.

West Ham managed to keep the game at 1-0 until five minutes after half time, a great solo effort by Nani putting the game beyond the visitors who had yet to muster a shot on target. Grant could feel aggrieved that Nani was allowed so much space inside the Hammers area.

Berbatov furthered West Ham’s woes, using his exceptional technique to volley United’s third.

Piquionne and Barrera were introduced but had little impact as West Ham struggled to attack after setting out in a defensive formation.

One positive note was the form of Kieran Dyer who has now played back to back games for the first time in a year. Fans will be hopeful Grant has a good relationship with the clubs owners as he will need to make new additions to his squad before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.
